FM-200 is one of many types of clean fire-extinguishing agents. Its chemical name is 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane. Clean agent systems are non-conductive and do not leave a residue. They are advantageous in areas where water suppression is not desirable, including data centers, computer rooms, and telecommunication facilities.
FM-200™ and 3M Novec 1230 fluid are both types of clean agents – they are safe to use in areas occupied by people, do not damage delicate equipment, and do not require clean-up. FM200 may require fewer or smaller cylinders than a Novec-1230, but this fluid has a higher Global Warming Potential. For this reason, FM-200 is already being phased down, which means that its production is heavily controlled and limited.
The primary distinction between clean agents and carbon dioxide is their toxicity. Whereas carbon dioxide is used in fire-extinguishing concentrations far exceeding fatal limits, clean agents are generally used in occupied areas in concentrations below toxic thresholds.
