Novec-1230 is one of many types of clean fire-extinguishing agents. Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is based on a proprietary chemical from 3M called a fluroroketone. The full chemical name for this compound is dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one. Clean agent systems are ideal for areas where water suppression is not desired, such as data centers, computer rooms, and telecommunication facilities. They are non-conductive and leave no residue.
3M Novec 1230 and FM-200™ fluid are two types of clean agents that can be safely used in areas occupied by people. They do not cause any damage to delicate equipment, and there is no need for clean-up after use. However, it’s important to note that FM200 may require fewer or smaller cylinders than Novec-1230, but the former has a higher Global Warming Potential.
The main difference between clean agents and carbon dioxide is that while carbon dioxide is used in fire-extinguishing concentrations far above fatal limits, clean agents are typically used in occupied areas at concentrations below toxic thresholds.
