Automatic sprinklers are devices that react to specific temperatures by releasing a stream of water in predetermined patterns and quantities to extinguish or prevent the spread of fire. The water is distributed through a network of pipes, typically installed overhead, with sprinklers placed at regular intervals along the pipes.
Most sprinkler systems fall within one of four categories which includes (1) wet pipe, (2) dry pipe, (3) preaction, and (4) deluge . Wet pipe systems are the most prevalent systems in place because they are the easiest to maintain and water is available at the sprinkler for immediate discharge when activated. They are however not applicable to areas where system components will be exposed to temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius, which is better be protected by dry pipe systems. On the other hand, preaction systems are desired when inadvertent water leakage from system piping is a main concern such as server rooms and museums. Finally, deluge systems are designed for quick extinguishment for fast spreading fires where significant amounts of highly combustible materials are present.
Sprinkler systems provide safety benefits by controlling or suppressing fires, reducing the risk to people and property. In addition to this, the flow of water from a sprinkler system can trigger an alarm, alerting occupants of the building to the presence of a fire.
